Please use the form provided on this site to input your contact info, desired program, date and time requested, and number of participants. Then, either e-mail or fax it to the Ishinomaki Future Support Association office (details below). You will be contacted within two days after receipt of the form.

About the disaster education programs

3.11 Future Support Association is carrying out a number of programs designed to keep alive the memories of the Great East Japan Earthquake and preserve the lessons learned from it to pass on to future generations.
The seeds of these activities were sown just after the disaster, when residents of Ishinomaki started to tell their own personal experiences of the tsunami to the volunteers who flocked to Ishinomaki to help in the recovery effort. Later on, requests for these talks started to come in from regular members of the public, resulting in the creation of the current programs.
We sincerely hope that the programs will serve to help save lives in the event of another disaster, as well as teach visitors to Ishinomaki about the value of life. Through them, we are trying to tell people about what we learned from the disaster, what life was like before and during the tsunami, and how things have changed afterwards. This is especially important as overt signs of the damage gradually disappear as reconstruction efforts proceed.

Available Programs

1. Speech on firsthand experience of the disaster

After watching a video presentation about the 3.11 tsunami, an actual victim of the disaster will talk about his/her experiences and feelings during the disaster and up until the present day.  (program time: 60 mins)

 

2. Bus/car tour

A staff member will board the customer’s bus/car and guide them around the areas worst affected by the disaster, explaining how the city looked before the tsunami, what it was like just afterwards, and giving details of reconstruction projects. (program time: 60 mins)

 

3. Walking tour of central Ishinomaki

A staff member will take participants on a walk around central Ishinomaki, using the Ishinomaki Tsunami Info AR App on a tablet to allow participants to experience Ishinomaki’s past, present and future. Topics covered include videos taken just after the disaster, information on tsunami height at the places visited, survivors’ experiences of the tsunami (told by themselves) and explanations of reconstruction projects. As a whole, participants will get an overall picture of how Ishinomaki has changed and is still changing. (program time: 90 mins)

 

4. 3.11 tsunami walking tour with a survivor

This is a special program tailored to the needs of schools visiting as part of a school trip or disaster prevention education and fieldwork. Larger parties are split into groups of around 20 and are guided around the city by a tsunami survivor, who talks about his/her experiences, visiting actual places where they met the tsunami, and actual evacuation routes taken at the time. (program time: 100 mins + 30 min review session)

※ This program is limited to schools only, up to 200 students accepted

 

5. Tsunami talk given at a venue of the customer’s choice

An actual survivor of the disaster goes to your locality and talks about his/her experiences. (program time: 60 – 90 mins)

 

6. Minami-Hama memorial tour

A walking tour held in one of the areas worst damaged by the tsunami. Participants learn about what the area was like before the disaster, walk around the area where tsunami damage is still apparent, and get the chance to consider natural disasters, and small aspects of daily life that are often taken for granted. (program time: 60 mins)

 

7. Open tsunami speech

Held on the second Saturday of every month in the Minami-Hama Tsunagukan Memorial Hall, participants can listen to the experiences of a tsunami survivor with the aid of a diorama of the area. (program time: 30 mins held at prearranged times)

 

FAQ

Q: Can the route for bus/car tours be changed?
A: The basic route cannot be changed. The tour route is centered around Ishinomaki Fish Market and the Minami-Hama & Kadonowaki districts, which were particularly badly affected by the tsunami with many buildings washed away. A visit to the Minami-Hama Tsunagukan Memorial Hall run by our organization is also included.

Q: Can you shorten the program times?
A: Depending on the program type, times can be shortened. Please enquire using the application form.

Q: Are bathrooms available?
A: Because there are not many public bathrooms in central Ishinomaki, we recommend particularly to groups that you stop off at a service area or somewhere similar before arriving in Ishinomaki. Your cooperation is appreciated

Q: Is parking available for buses?
A: We use existing bus parking facilities in Ishinomaki. Parking will be reserved by us on your behalf (limited to the duration of your program).

Q: What should groups do about lunch?
A: We will help you choose from restaurants that have reopened since the disaster. Please inform us if you have any particular desires or requests regarding cuisine.
